When researching identity guides I realized that the guide is very important to the project. Basically, we have to think of every situation the logo could be in. Whether it’s the determining the size the logo should be on a banner to figuring out what colors it should be. When determining what color the logo should be we have to get a palette and figure out the best solution. For example; the background behind the logo or the colors of the words itself. When figuring out the best solution for the size there should be several examples of different sizes both big and small. Especially small because if it doesn’t work small then its going to not work for the business card size. Making the identity guide is the foundation of everything to me because it determines everything the logo should be. The logo is crucial because it’s how people recognize the company. I was first confused about the whole process of making an identity guide and I didn’t realize how important it was. Now that I have educated myself about how to make one I am very excited to start the process!

Researching this project interested me because I have never heard of buying local before. It intrigued me that there is huge effort to help local economy and keeping produce fresh and organic. I found out that BFBL is all over the country, even up north where I live. I definitely now want my parents to join a farm where I live in the Washington D.C. area. I learned that having your produce local it helps with allergies and is an inexpensive way to have fresh produce right at your fingertips. The Chattanooga chapter if farley new. It was formed August 2008. The regions of the chapter stretch out to a 100-mile radius that includes 70 counties. The chapter includes a food guide that includes food markets, restaurants, chefs’, caterers, and community gardens, which you can find local food. I am glad that Chattanooga jumped on the ban wagon with Buy Fresh Buy Local because this is something that Chattanooga needs to stay healthy and help out local farms.

When asked what a creative brief was I had no clue. I’m definitely glad I learned what it was and how to make one. Basically a creative brief is exactly what its called. It provides a description of the project. It goes over the target audience, objectives, and creative details which the members of the team plan to achieve throughout the project. The overview of the project should be one to two sentences that discuss the value of the project. The category review section is used to list products, which are in competition with the project. Basically researching other companies and seeing how they are successful and taking from them to incorporate into the project. The target audience section is used to say who the target audience is. Think of demographics and who you are targeting and put that information into this section. The company portfolio is part is to describe the activities of the company were working with. Business objectives and design strategy is used to discuss the design goals. Project scope, time line, and budget are done in phases. This section is to be done in stages. The deliverables need to be discussed and when to get the word out to get the audience effect. The last part of the creative brief is to research data. This was the section I worked on. This section was important because it lists questions that were unable to be answered throughout the project. I’m not going to lie making a design brief is stressful but beneficial and crucial to the entire project.

Reading this book gave me more insight into the world of design and business. It helped me differentiate between what a logotype is and what a brand is. One of my favorite examples of this is when he talks about Clorox buying out Hidden Valley Ranch. He gave the example of putting the Clorox logo on the Hidden Valley Ranch bottle, but instead the company made a smart decision and kept the two products different from one another.

Staying focused is important when designing products for your brand. You want the consumer to feel comfortable every time. Pay attention to the details. Towards the end of the book he talks about how “logos are dead.” Today we don’t necessarily solely depend on the printing press  because we have the internet and television. This way the producer can branch out and interact with people.

This book really helped me understand branding better in an easy way. It gave me a better understanding of what really goes into your brand and how to market yourself well. Today being a successful designer means you know all aspects of what goes on and knowing how to design and be smart about business decisions will really help the designer in the end. This book was easy to read and had a lot of useful information. I will take what I have learned from this book and apply it to my own design skills.

I really enjoyed this project because the guidelines gave us a lot of room to play with our images. My words I was working with were joy and grief. It was easy for me to portray these emotions in my pages because i made one dark and gloomy and the other bright and happy. This guide book will be helpful in the future when finding printers around the Chattanooga area. I like the fact that everyone had their work in the book to make it more diverse with styles and elements. When actually printing the book through LuLu I found it to be very easy with step by step directions.

I was intimidated by this project in the beginning because i had never worked with real clients before. And im not going to lie it was intimidating throughout the process also. Because Grant and Lisa are also designers it was harder for us to pitch them our ideas and have them be amazed by what we came up with. i did enjoy working with them a I learned a lot from this experience. With my poster I wanted to do something that incorporated both the person and the star that I drew. I made my poster to be organic to match the looseness of the hand drawn face. I also wanted it to be patriotic by using red, white, and blue for my color palette.

I would have never thought how much work went into the printing process before our visit. The machine was overwhelming but in a good way, I was fascinated by it all. The press was so intricate and big, it was hard to take it all in. Everything on the press has a purpose, every roll of paper leads somewhere to be printed on in a certain ink order. I was also interested in how the plates were put on. They snap them into place so they will not move. Going on this field trip taught me a lot. I knew how a press worked but actually being there while it was running and seeing everything inside of it was an experience I will never forget.

Before going to RMG I had no idea how much work went into the process from start to finish. Visiting it and going through each step really put it in perspective. There was so much in the first place we went to but what interested me the most was the second place we went. They do a lot of jobs for big companies and it was great to see the process of how of these big banners and  advertisements are made.

I really enjoyed these artist because they were all different but also very alike. They all had a different grasp on art and what art should look like. Mark Andreas went for more sculpture/architectural feel. Disney explored with iPod’s and technology. My favorite display was from Ryan Wolfe. He went for technology in an artistic way. All of these artists have a different outlook on art but when it comes down to it they are all the same.
